Marine Le Pen, the leader of France's far-right party Rassemblement National, has been convicted of embezzlement. She, along with 24 other members of the party, was found guilty of misappropriating €3 million in European Parliament funds intended to support staff based in France.
As a result of the conviction, Le Pen has been disqualified from holding public office for the next five years, effectively jeopardizing her bid for the 2027 French presidential election.
In addition to the disqualification, Le Pen was sentenced to four years in prison, with two years of the sentence suspended, and imposed a fine of €100,000. She is expected to appeal the ruling.
